Today, we are able to do business anywhere and at anytime. I can have a client across the country or across the world. We live in the bigger, better and faster age.
Does that mean we have to respond to every email, tweet and Skype message as urgently as the sender wants? Here’s my opinion on that in one word – no.
This week, Chris Brogan wrote a great post on time and what he calls Anywhen. He also wrote a great manifesto that I also love. This got me thinking about all the times I have had someone call me, then email me and then Skype me to see if I got their email – enough already!
Just because we can contact someone on a moment’s notice doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do when it’s not needed. I really do love to help people and I cherish all my relationships with my Social Network friends and clients, but I am not a machine.
Just because you think you have an emergency, it doesn’t mean it’s an emergency to others. I have a family and a personal somewhat personal life along with running my business. I don’t expect someone to get to me right away unless someone hair’s on fire – expect the same from me.
Let me sum it up:
Give me at least a day to get back to you. I promise I will get back to you. If it is a dire situation, state WHAT it is. Just because we want things bigger, better and faster doesn’t mean people are all built the same way.
Ok, I’m done now. Now I am off to cook dinner for my family. I hope you take time out for yourself and your family today as well.
